What is college ruled paper?
College ruled paper has 7.1 mm (9/32 in) between ruled lines. It is also called medium ruled, and is the standard format for secondary school, university and professional writing. An A4 sheet holds about 37 lines.
What is wide ruled paper?
Wide ruled paper has 8.7 mm (11/32 in) between ruled lines. It is also called legal ruled, and is the standard for primary handwriting instruction. An A4 sheet holds about 30 lines.
What is narrow ruled paper?
Narrow ruled paper has roughly 6 mm between ruled lines. The US narrow ruled standard is 1/4 inch, which is 6.35 mm. It maximises lines per page for dense note-taking.
What is the difference between college ruled and wide ruled?
College ruled is 7.1 mm and wide ruled is 8.7 mm, a difference of 1.6 mm per line. That gives college ruled about 37 lines on an A4 sheet against 30 for wide ruled, roughly 23% more writing lines.
How many lines are on a sheet of lined paper?
An A4 sheet holds about 37 college-ruled lines, allowing a 15 mm margin top and bottom. At wide ruled it holds about 30, at narrow ruled about 44, and at 5 mm about 53. US Letter holds slightly fewer and Legal substantially more.
What size is lined paper?
Lined paper is most commonly A4 (210 × 297 mm) or US Letter (215.9 × 279.4 mm). A4 is the ISO 216 international standard used in most of the world; Letter is the North American standard and is 17.6 mm shorter but 5.9 mm wider.
Is lined paper the same as ruled paper?
Yes, lined paper and ruled paper mean the same thing. Both describe paper printed with horizontal guide lines. 'Ruled' is the more common term in manufacturing and specification, 'lined' in everyday use.
How do I print lined paper at the correct size?
Set page scaling to 100% or Actual Size in your print dialog. The default 'Fit to page' setting shrinks the sheet by a few percent, which changes the real line spacing and stops the paper matching a printed notebook.
What line spacing should I use for handwriting practice?
Use 8.7 mm or wider for children learning letter formation. Reduce toward 7.1 mm as control improves, and only to 6 mm once handwriting is consistently sized. Wider spacing gives room for ascenders and descenders without collision.
What is Cornell notes paper?
Cornell notes paper divides the page into a cue column, a notes column and a summary band. The cue column takes the left 30% for keywords and questions, and the summary band runs across the bottom 15%. It was developed at Cornell University to support active recall.

The most common cause is print scaling. If page scaling is set to 'Fit to page' rather than 100%, the sheet prints a few percent small and every line shifts. The second cause is a mismatch between A4 and Letter.
