## Ruling specifications (canonical reference data)

Line pitch is the centre-to-centre distance between adjacent rules. Line counts assume a
15 mm top and bottom margin on each sheet.

Paper size and orientation are UI controls, not separate URLs. Cornell uses a dedicated
two-column rendering path. Vertical writing is a toggle on any generator, not its own page.

## Glossary (inline)

- **Ruled paper**: Paper printed with horizontal guide lines to keep handwriting straight and consistently sized. Also called lined paper. The distance between lines is the defining specification of any ruled format.
- **Line pitch**: The centre-to-centre distance between two adjacent ruled lines, measured in millimetres or inches. Line pitch — not paper size — is what distinguishes college ruled from wide ruled paper.
- **Lines per inch**: Line pitch expressed as a rate rather than a distance: 25.4 divided by the pitch in millimetres. College ruled (7.1 mm) is about 3.58 lines per inch; wide ruled (8.7 mm) is about 2.92. The measure US ruled-paper packaging most often uses.
- **Right margin rule**: A margin rule printed on the right edge of the page instead of the left, used for right-to-left scripts such as Hebrew and Arabic where annotation space belongs on the side writing begins from.
- **Law ruled**: A ruling convention on Legal-size paper combining a wide or legal-ruled line pitch with a double margin rule — a narrow left margin plus a wider right-hand margin for annotation. Traditionally used for legal drafting.

- **Grammage**: Paper weight expressed in grams per square metre (gsm). Ruled paper below about 80 gsm is prone to show-through from fountain pens and markers.
- **Show-through**: Ink from one side of a sheet being visible from the other. Heavier grammage paper and lighter line weights both reduce it.
